Lately I've been drawing quite a lot on the metro and the bus... it passes the time magnificently and the motion forces me to loosen up and stop drawing in such an uptight way! No wait, that top one was drawn on the sofa actually! And the two coloured ones are very much experiments in coloured pencil and gouache, with a mind to fashion illustration...evidently not drawn on a bus.

A new a5 sized image of a Elizabethan lady that will appear in an 'Postcards' exhibition at the Line Gallery in Linlithgow in October. More soon...!
As you might have noticed, I didn't quite get it together with the pop-up exhibition (due to lack of space and time and becoming briefly housebound due to rioting!) Oh dear, famous last words. I actually had a bit of a holiday instead - involving LOTS of culture, including a wonderful trip to the Horniman Museum, a trip to the fantastic ceramics department of the V&A, a weekend in Brighton - (the Pavilion is amazing!)... and much more. Back up in Scotland the noo, and in the process of sorting out my plans... Anyway thought I should nourish the blog with some work, since it's been a while!

I went to see this wonderful installation by Carnovsky at DreamBagsJaguarShoes in Shoreditch. When viewed through red, green or blue filters, the layers of printing emerge and recede to reveal breathtaking flora and fauna. At night, the same effect is achieved by changing coloured lighting. Magnificent!

Hello, I was wondering if anyone has any ideas of good little craft/design shops/galleries in the Red Door/Concrete Wardrobe down here in London? I'm looking for places that could stock my jewels... If you have any suggestions, please let me know!

In a similar vein, I ought to mention Black Box Boutique, a new curious design emporium which opened a couple of weekends ago in Edinburgh's Grassmarket. I have some plates and tiles on show there, alongside the work of numerous highly talented jewellers. The displays have been designed with so much flair and attention to detail - very worth a visit!

Tardy update: I have recently been all over Edinburgh's Broughton Street like a rash... notably in Concrete Wardrobe, where my slot as Maker of the Month has just wound up, and in the newly opened branch of Coco Chocolate, just across the street. I painted a large mural for them... see photo above... Or pop in in person for a delicious cup of cocoa or purchase of some delectable chocolates. Just produced this logo for Coco too.

In other news, I have relocated to London this month! I have (semi) ambitious plans to get a pop-up exhibition of cardboard knick knacks on the go. There, now it's in writing I'd better blooming follow through!

This weekend that's just passed was a most marvelous one – because on Saturday it was my sister's wedding day! I mention this because I had quite a hand in the aesthetics of the day, and would like to show you some innovations of mine which added to the general jolliness of the occasion. Beginning with the invitation I posted a while back, which formed the inspiration for the rest of my creations on the day...

Such as these giants cardboard birds and flowers that decorated an outside wall of the house...

And these signs for the well-catered-for dietary requirement guests!

Giant pointing hands are always quite authoritative.

I conceived of the concept for the 3-tier cake back in February (?) the start of the year, and from then on, my mum and I toiled with the sugar paste to create this delightfully gaudy carpet of flowers, with my mum's ceramic birds and figures emerging from amongst them.

My good photographer pal Erika Stevenson was also in attendance – her photographs of the day are wonderful and capture the spirit of proceedings like nobody's business... trust Erika to include a comedy dog snap (or two).

All in all, it was a lovely, and very creative day!

Maker of the Month

Hello All! I have returned once again from obscurity – I've spent the last four weeks learning how to teach English as a foreign language, to enable me to fulfill my dream of escaping this rain-soaked land and supporting my artistic endeavors with interesting and sociable work... (That's the plan in any case!) Anyway, on either side of said course I've been exceptionally busy, and from tomorrow in Edinburgh's Concrete Wardrobe, you can sample some of the fruits of my labours, in a showcase known as Maker of the Month. There will be a window display of my devising, featuring this little boat, and a hell of a lot of animal brooches... (can you guess what it is yet?), plates, tiles, cake stands, a large bowl, illustrations and other new jewellery. So do go for a look... The showcase will be up until the end of July, at 50 Broughton Street, which is a lovely place for a stroll in any case, with it's marvellous cafés and quaint shops. The Trans-Siberian Art Centre

A piece of my work recently went on a long and exciting journey to a far-flung place - all the way from Moscow to Beijing on the Trans-Siberian Railway to be exact, as part of an experimental art project by Britt+Jon, called the Trans-Siberian Art Centre. The work of 150 artists, in postcard form, plastered the cabin walls of a train carriage, exposing the work to unsuspecting passengers, and throughout the two week journey, performance artists performed site-specific pieces, to the bemusement/amusement of those on board and on station platforms.The project seems to have been a great adventure. Hello! Well, it's some time since I've posted anything, but let me say it's not from want of things to post - more a combo of being rather busy and keeping things under wraps! I've been occupied since I last wrote, illustrating a book of gaelic short stories by assorted contemporary authors, for Storlann, the Scottish National Gaelic Education Resource Agency. It's been lots of fun, and a somewhat new direction for me, the illustrations all being in black and white and employing more photoshop than yours truly has previously been accustomed to. The cover has to remain a mystery until the book is out in Gaelic schools after the summer, but I can gladly share with you some of the 28 interior illustrations. The ones below are some of my favourite title pages for the individual stories - essentially little visual compilations of events and images from the tales.

Perhaps that's plenty for now - I'll post more throughout the week to keep things interesting!

I've been making lots of new pieces for various exhibitions... including one opening this coming Saturday at the Dancing Light Gallery in Whitmuir. All the info's here. It's been lots of fun playing with my Parisian theme! Pictured below are lots more blue and white collaborations with my Mum, which are going to a few different places... Enjoying the seductive gold lustre on the rims of the bowls... and it's been nice indulging my love of folksy flora and fauna.

I have been on quite a ceramic jewellery drive this month, producing loads of new pieces for a forthcoming display in the Alfred East Art Gallery in Kettering in Northamptonshire. Below I attempt a rather primitive photo story... following the jewels from pre-firing to coming out of the kiln and having their fittings glued on!

I've had great fun trying out new designs, especially with making hairslides and rings - helpfully demonstrating below how impractical it is to wear several at once.

Greetings! Happy New Year and all that jazz! Yes, January is upon us, cold, grey and a bit rubbish. But wait, you cynic! Fun, interest and enchantment are just around the corner - this Friday a pop-up exhibition opens in Ruthven Mews Shopping Arcade off Glasgow's Byres Road. The show then runs for 4 days only. Co-curated by Libby Walker and Joanna Susskind of Toad's Caravan, the exhibition will feature some of their own work, as well as the following:
Rosalind Thomson, Orla O'Neil, Erika Stevenson, Max Raskin, Circa Vintage, Soizig Carey, Lesley Barnes, Steven Bonner, Klingatron and myself.
Should be an interesting mix of photography, illustration, jewellery and much more besides, all exploring icy winter themes...
Launch Night is this Friday from 6pm. The show is upstairs in The Ruthven Mews Shopping Arcade- follow the signs from top of Ruthven Lane, perhaps see you there!

Here's a wee piece of Xmas-themed promo, and an idea I've been wanting to make happen for ages...and finally found time for. The play is a classic old 'un involving a miser and a disapproving angel guilt-tripping the old geezer into more fitting festive behaviour. The theatre neatly folds and lies flat enough to put in an envelope, and (hopefully) survive a journey in the post before springing back to life!
In other news I also recently rustled up these illustrations for Laura Grime's book of compositions penned by her numerous protegés - a fun and colourful project. Meanwhile I've been working on some new ceramics, some of which must remain under wraps for the time being... but I can show you this bad boy.

Hello... Look, I've made a gianormous cardboard advent calendar for the window of the taste-tastic Coco chocolate shop in Bruntsfield in Edinburgh... Behind each window a delightful chocolate-based treat awaits! Recent activities also include producing these snazzy ceramic Christmas decorations and new brooch designs, which will be on sale at the Made in the Shade Barras fair on the 11th of December... and thereafter in my shop most probably!

I ought to let you know about a craft fair I'll be doing with the fair Libby Walker on the 11th of December...(KEY XMAS SHOPPING DATE) This is one of Made in the Shade's new weekly craft and vintage fairs in their new snazzy base in the centre of the Barras, Glasgow's ye olde fantastic market district. Should be fun, the Barras is a proper day out in itself! Libby and I are also doing another fair later this month, more details to follow when I have them...Unbelievable that the shadow of Christmas looms again.
Talking of which, I have also stuck a few new things onto Etsy... and some old things - last year's Christmas cards that is, at bargain, pure knock-down prices. Also a few of the new brooches are on there... I urge thee to ch-check it out.

Istanbul Toy Museum and Other Delights

While I'm remembering, it seems wise to post some photographs I took in the Istanbul Toy Museum. I seem to be developing a minor fixation with such places; if a city has one I will descend upon it. This one was an odyssey to reach, tucked away in Asian Istanbul's dense interior, but after bus, foot and taxi, we finally arrived, and had the place virtually to ourselves. It is chock full of the stuff I love, especially incredible German dolls houses and shops, wind up tin toys and dolls.

Istanbul is actually an incredible place for visual culture, and felt refreshingly different from other European capitals I've visited. Mosques are breathtakingly decorated in ceramic tiles or intricately painted... I enjoyed these Christian mosaics that still remain in Aya Sofia.

And there is the amazingly modestly presented Mosaic museum, housing this incredible Roman floor. Beyond its attractions though, the visual experience of the city itself is full of intrigue and charm ... You are left with the feeling that there was much you did not see, and that you must return someday. Pretty romantic, eh?

A Splendid Weekend...

...That's what I had in Glasgow. Yes, I've returned to Blogland, after a lengthy absence during which a kind-of-summer took place, followed by a proper spell of heat and magic in Istanbul, where I took full and enthusiastic advantage of the panorama function on my camera, yaas!

Anyway, this weekend, on Saturday, I saw these guys, my fave new band, Everything Everything, at King Tut's Wah Wah Hut. It was Amazing.

Then on Sunday I dutifully went to church, or a church of sorts anyway. A church for creative types, as originated by these chaps, Hole in my Pocket, who have created their own gently mocking parody of religion in tandem with their amusing exhibition at the Arches.There were sermons (think entertaining/enlightening speeches on different aspects of visual culture)... such as Sebastian Tomb's (founder of A+DS) talk about this geometric map he has designed in order to make the viewer reassess geography. And Gregor Wright's hilarious talk about the charmingly backward world of non-games. Among other wonderful things, there was also ukulele-led mass karaoke, Gary McNair's fantastic role-play as minister and tea n scones to finish. Perfect! The next and I believe, last one, is next Sunday the 10th. (Apparently I may be called upon to do an impromptu sermon should someone pull out!)

After this I trotted along to Welcome Home, which is currently celebrating its First birthday, for which a wonderful newspaper-style annual has been produced, and makers like myself who stock the shop have each donated a piece of work for a grand raffle, to be called at the end of the month. Tickets cost £1 each, and give you the chance of winning one of many delightful items including prints, jewellery and cushions! Don't have any pictures of the wall of prizes to show, so you'd better check it out for yourselves!

At my most recent craft fair, some kind patrons of the stall remarked upon the relation between my ceramic designs and those of Estonian-born ceramicist Mari Simmulson, active during the 50s-70s. Oddly enough I wasn't familiar with her work... but wrote down the name and have subsequently been enjoying these rather substandard images dredged from google. Charming style and a happy discovery!

My illustrative life as ever revolves around the birthdays of family members, father in this instance, and a card inspired by a lovely fold-out guide to shadow hand puppetry I picked up in Pollock's Toy Shop in London on a recent trip. 'Tis a marvelous retail destination, as evidenced by my indulging in rather a lot of pounds worth of toy theatres, dioramas, fold out carousels, scraps and the like. Also in London, among other splendid delights, you can find Pollock's Toy Museum which I wholeheartedly recommend, it's a great day out for the toy-fond among you. I would have taken a ridiculous number of photos had my camera not been maliciously destroyed at a party the night before. Sniffle. Not to worry, I have a new one, digital cameras are cheap as chips these days. Good job, as it allows me to show you some snaps of fantastic David Hockney etchings I recently enjoyed at the Berwick Gymnasium Gallery, alongside the work of Berwick childrens illustrators of whom I am one, kind of.

Also, last weekend's exploits: Libby Walker, pattern designer extraordinaire and ex-eca cohort and I crisped up in the blazing sun while selling our illustrative wares at Glasgow's West End Festival. A blooming good time was had by all, not least our fishy friend, though he didn't enjoy being trampled upon I'm sure.
And Finally, if you're partial to a spot of bird-life you may enjoy my Bjork-endorsed costume at this year's Edinburgh College of Art Revel (read: HUGE Party of the Year Extravanganza.)

Yes, I am perilously excited by this as you can tell from the use of uppercase in the title, mainly because it has taken a ridiculously long to time to put everything in the shop and my jubilation on finishing is great. After yesterday's craft fair adventures in Edinburgh I've put my remaining pieces on Etsy in a bid to say 'Out with the Old! AND in with the new!' So things are quite cheap on there you might notice - bargains dare I say? Ceramic tiles, tablets and jewellery to be had. I've even plonked in a few well-place mystery freebies. Not because there's anything wrong with them I hasten to add, more because I'd like to get rid of them and make new stuff, which I am going to go and do now. Ta ta!

Another craft fair! Waay. This one promises to be a corker, top class, unmissable etc. Made in the Shade are putting on this beauty in the Roxy Art House next Saturday the 15th and I shall be there manning my joint stall with the work of Lizzy Stewart. Said Lizzy is sadly in absentia, but her trusty cohort and fellow art wizard Verity Keniger is going to step into the mannning void so I won't be short of company! I've been busy crafting to the max in preparation and have given my line of jewels a spruce up and a new name, The Grime Jewels. As in the Crown Jewels, see? Have loads of new designs, and gone on a bit of a colour riot, so watch it. Also printed a few hundred cards in 7 new designs... and will be peddling some of my remaining Home Sweet Home plates and knick knacks. Keep an eye out for the crafty cut-price to clear selection of jewels I'm trying to get rid of, bargains guaranteed!
Also, Nota Bene, jewels of mine are also retailing in Che Camille in Glasgow, the Red Door Gallery in Edinburgh and the Edinburgh Printmakers. Plates are showing in the Strathearn Gallery's summer show.

At Berwick-Upon-Tweed's Gymnasium gallery next month will be a great opportunity to see a travelling exhibition of David Hockney illustrations for Grimm's Fairytales. Running alongside will be a show of children's book illustrations by illustrators with a Berwick connection, including some work I did a few years ago for a Serafina Press children's book set in nearby Eyemouth... Also starring Sophie Elm's work for the same publisher! Illustrious company.

I'm most pleased to be showing ceramics and original drawings at the Gin Palace Collective's second pop-up shop on the 10th-11th of April, an extravaganza of fashion, product design, illustration, jewellery and much more from the world of scottish design and visual communication. Back in November, I exhibited at the first Gin Palace event, which focused largely on emerging talent gleaned from degree shows, and it was a genuine pleasure to be part of something so well curated and professionally run by three great people (Leah and Ruth Black and Greg Reid). Home Sweet Home Comes Down

After its small but perfectly formed residency at the Maisonette, Home Sweet Home closed its floral curtain on Sunday, and will shortly be boxed up (what remains of it) and taken home to my sweet (and sadly temporary) home... Soon to be found in different locations - such as my Etsy store- more on that later no doubt. However, today I was delighted to discover the appearance of this small feature in the List magazine off the back of said show (also the first of a series of features profiling work from Central Station) And the troubadors of Made in the Shade have written this post-show eulogy on their blog, complete with some arty snapshots of the installation (and one of myself, mid-banter, euch.) It's been a fruitful and interesting experience, which has made me want to search out similar opportunities to exhibit in this way... so, eh, like, watch this space! ken?

I've been keeping the post-exhibition anticlimax at bay by cracking on with another project, namely a set of illustrations for Borders Council's new art education initiative Living Room, which aims to redress the balance of primary school art teaching by introducing ideas about architecture, form and the built environment, with reference to five borders towns, numero uno- Peebles, above! I must say it is really refreshing to work in this way again, ceramics firmly to one side for the moment!

Here I am installing the work earlier today in the Maisonette, looking rather pleased about it... and anticipating tomorrow night's opening... after which, don't forget, the show runs from the 17th until the 28th of February. N.B Work can be collected from monday the 1st - Wednesday the 3rd March.

Home Sweet Home at the Tiny Gallery

Hello One and All! Let's put my relative slackness on the blogging front (there's always some excuse) down to the fact that for the last month or more I've been day in day out sitting at my desk diligently decorating (nice bit of alliteration there) ceramic plates for my show in the Tiny Gallery in Glasgow. Now the exhibition is soon to be upon us (or me, more specifically), opening next tuesday the 16th at 6.30-9pm... all readers are welcome (I feel I can say this safely, given that a facebook party-style rush is hardly within the realms of possibility.) Here then, is an invite with all the relevant details, and a map which informs thee of how to reach the Tiny Gallery, itself located within the Made in the Shade Maisonette, De Courcy's Arcade, Cresswell Lane, Glasgow. A gallery within a shop within an arcade, down a lane, no less! The show opens to the public on wednesday the 17th and comes down on the 28th of february - the final weekend will be marked by a closing sale, during which pieces can be taken away to loving homes - more details to follow closer to the time, no doubt. I realise that it probably appears from the flyer and the photo I posted a while back that I've only actually made two plates, so to rectify this impression, here's another snap... I promise you, there are many more besides, which so far I haven't had time to photograph... but don't want to spoil the surprise, do I? Hope you can make it!

A veritable goldmine of inspiration for my Home Sweet Home show at the Made in the Shade Maisonette's Tiny Gallery, these Ideal Home Books produced by the Daily Mail back in the day (1951-53) are stuffed full of ads for kitchen utensils and home appliances and amusing articles like 'Fashion is your Slave' and 'Be Gay With Your Lighting.' Currently combining this with perpetual viewing of Mad Men, all in the name of research of course!

Look! I made my dad some chocolates for christmas and spent blooming ages painting a box for them to go in, pictured here in front of a sleeve of fantastic Jonny Hannah prints, purchased by my ma. It was immense fun creating this present, especially icing the chocs; for some reason I find icing amazingly enjoyable. Plan B career, peut-etre?

Finally! I finished the final panel of my three piece suite! The land of panpipes, llamas and people dressed in manically bright colours juxtaposed with New York, home of ssmoooooth jazz.

While the snow onslaught continues, I am ensconced in my room, chained to the easel painting a set for a musical kids show that my sister is creating, with the fantastic theme of a trip around the globe. The set is going to comprise three square panels, two of which I've completed already. Working for this age group is a good laugh; you don't have to scrupulously avoid clichés and the like, according to Laura anyway. All the better I say! - for it means I can paint a moustacheod french man dressed in beret and stripes playing an accordion. What could be more fulfilling? I road tested the panels so far on some local tots, who mistook my sari-wearing Indian woman for Joseph, dad of Jesus, which all goes to show that ensuring absolute geographical accuracy is not so very vital.

Along with Genevieve Ryan, Marc Noble and Ursula Cheng (all fellow ECA illustration graduates) I am exhibiting for one night only at new Glasgow-based design collective the Gin Palace's pop-up exhibition The Shape of Things to Come on Saturday the 28th November. This selling exhibition in an empty listed building on Miller Street, Glasgow, brings together an exciting and varied grouping of work from illustrators, jewellers, products designers, textile and fashion designers, animators and more and should be a fantastic evening! I had some heartening news on saturday when I chanced upon the Made in the Shade Maisonette (well worth a visit) in De Courcy's arcade off Glasgow's Byers Road... the lovely ladies who run Made in the Shade chose my submission for the Tiny Gallery (at 1m squared it is indeed very tiny, but therein lies its charm)... thus I will be exhibiting an installation there in February 2010. I rather like some of these images from Vivien McDermid's graphic short story which won the Observer/Jonathon Cape prize... (You can read/look at the whole tale via the link)... makes me quite inspired to attempt one myself - something I've contemplated for quite a while... it's a fantastic way to tell a story, though I reckon making it work is deceptively simple.

Yes, indeed, a craft fair a cut above the rest is taking place on Saturday the 24th of October in the Bowery, Roxburgh Place, Edinburgh, from 12 noon until 6... there will be many a stall selling delectable handmade items, as well as food and music of the highest order, so I'm told. Anyway, I would say that, because I'm one of the stallholders. Yes, I'll have a table packed with ceramic jewellery, cards and the like. Tell your friends!

Owl and Lion Gallery at 3D2D Craft Fair

The Owl and Lion Gallery, ever-intriguing enliveners of Edinburgh's Grassmarket, have a space at this year's 3D2D Craft Fair at the West End of Princes Street (the bottom of Lothian Road – follow the link for all the info!)... and myself, Lizzy Stewart and Genevieve Ryan are just some of the young whippersnappers selling an array of desirable illustrated items therein... Above you can see just a few of the vast array of ceramic jewels I've been creating for the purpose. The fair is always a really nice event with a genuine feeling of the festival – we entreat you to come along!
